Malawi Economic Justice Network (MEJN) under umbrella of Southern African People’s Solidarity Network (SAPSN) is set to host 2021 people’s summit, to be held at crossroads hotel in Lilongwe. The summit will be held on 17th to 19th August, 2021 under the theme ” Elevate Justice and Equality for Inclusive Social and Economic Growth in COVID-19 Era and Beyond”
During media briefing which was held on 14th August, 2021 in Lilongwe, one of the discussants Julius Ngo’ma, who is also a SAPSN Programme Chairperson, stated that the 2021 Peoples is expected to table-out five thematic areas including i) Debt and Aid, ii) Human Rights, Governance, Peace and Security, iii) Climate Change and Natural Resources, iv) Cross boarder trade, Industry and Economic Justice, and v) Gender and Social Protection.
“Among other crucial issues also to be under the spotlight are mining, COVID-19 related issues, industrialization, and presentation of communique to incoming SADC chairperson Dr. Lazarus Chakwera, which has been developed to present social and economic issues affecting people within the bloc” Ngo’ma highlighted.
Regarding youth-centric programming, ActionAid Youth-Activista Aisha Katungwe stated that issues concerning youth have not been regarded with contempt during the People’s Summit. According to Katungwe, ” We have lined up several programs that entirely concern young people including sexual and reproductive health and rights, youth inclusiveness in social and economic decision-making, governance, political inclusion among others. She further stated that youth participation in developmental and SADC affairs presents a window of opportunity for the fortunes of our countries and the region to be drastically transformed into greater social and economic growth, prosperity, and self-determination that is unparalleled the world over.
She, therefore, called upon youth to show interest in following the people’s summit deliberations through accessible platforms.
The press briefing was graced with four discussants namely; Julius Ngo’ma, CISONECC, Mrs. Bertha Phiri, MEJN Executive Director, Aisha Katungwe Activista Project Officer-ActionAid, and Father David Nowagana, MEDIA team chairperson
Malawi is also anticipated to host the SADC summit on 17th to 19th August where President of Malawi Dr. Lazarus M. Chakwera will take on the SADC chairmanship, but the People’s Summit will run from 17th to 27th August.
